Designing A Character In A Cartoon Or Videogame.
Creating a video game or a cartoon character would take patience and a lot of imagination. The characters are the key elements in which a story would revolve in. They move the story forward, trigger events based on the story and sometimes give life to the storyline, depending on the character’s mood and attitude (i.e. sad, joyful, mysterious, agile, creepy, etc.).
Designing the character
Designs are roughly based on ideas which first comes into mind. The animator would design different characters that depend upon the setting and story line in a video game or cartoon world. For starters, designing a character would often base on other artist’s characters. Ideas would start pouring in, in which the animator has the inspiration to get started in designing his own character after doing some research and gaining inspiration from other artists.
Naming the character
Names are somewhat related to the type of genre a character would be in. For example action games or cartoons would give a character a somewhat edgy, or serious type of name; i.e. Sam Fisher in the Splinter Cell video game series or Johnny Quest in the Johnny Quest cartoon series. Comedy genre games and cartoons would give a character a kind of a wacky or wild name that is way beyond an ordinary name of a person; i.e. Sponge Bob Squarepants or Duke Nukem just to name a few. Artists and animators would often ask the question, what does your name mean, in which they would think of ideas to the meaning of names of their designed character.
Character’s mood and attitude
When characters are designed, they are also based on what type of character class they are in. They can be funny but have this mysterious look or can be cute but have a very mean and bad ass attitude. It is up to the person who designs their character on what type of attributes they would give them and ways of how they would act that could bring their character to life.
