Disposable versus Cloth Nappies

Hypoallergenic Washable, Reusable Diaper Liner

When parents find out they are expecting, there are a whole host of things they think about. What to eat during the pregnancy to make sure the baby grows healthily, the plan of action when the due date arrives, the inevitable remodeling of a corner or a room to create that space for the new bundle of joy, are just a few among many more musings. One thing that will definitely cross any parent’s mind, and will take root permanently for about a year or two, is the issue of nappies.

There are two schools of thought when it comes to nappy decisions. There is the traditional and the modern. The modern school of thought will lean more in favor of using the new disposable diapers. Medical researchers and doctors have all pitched in to create ultra-modern disposable nappies. There are thin ones, there are some with a core that gels the instant liquid touches it ensuring less spillage and leaks, there are those that have adjustable waistbands, and the list goes on and on. Some parents would argue that using disposable diapers is the way to go. You can get the exact kind of diaper you want and as soon as it is soiled, throw it away. No mess, no fuss. However, there is the downside that some babies are allergic to disposable diapers, even the most hypo-allergenic ones. Plus, babies need a lot of diapers especially in the first months after birth. Countless disposable diapers adds to garbage overall and takes a chunk out of any parent’s pocket.

The traditional school of thought is decidedly simpler. This belief strongly favors the use of cloth nappies (diapers). Not to be left behind, cloth nappies are now modernized as well. Gone are the stark white cloth nappies (diapers) in our grandmother’s days. Today, you can still get those cloth nappies (diapers) but you can also get cloth nappy covers with different designs and colors. These are usually plastic based with cloth wrapping that also helps keep leakage away for a few minutes, giving the parent time to change and wash the baby. Cloth nappies (diapers) are reusable which is great for the pocket and the environment. Plus, because most terry nappies are made from cotton and natural material, you will very rarely experience allergic reactions. There are also hypoallergenic cloth nappies (diapers) to make extra sure.

For sure, all parents must think long and hard about what kind of underpants they’ll want their baby to wear. The many options out there just give them a wide choice.
