Safety Concerns When Buying A Goose Down Duvet

As the winter months approach, the purchase of a goose down duvet is probably one of the best purchases you will ever make.  Even if you were able to locate a a goose down duvet at a good sale price, in all likelihood you probably spent more on this item than you would on many other home decor items you’ve bought in the past.  As you take the goose down duvet out of the package and lay it out on your bed, it’s important to be mindful of a few safety concerns.  Hopefully, this is a duvet you will have around for years and will take the steps necessary to make sure the duvet is well cared for and safe to use.

The first concern is how to keep the duvet clean.  Since you have bought a goose down duvet, it’s advised that the item should be professionally dry cleaned and not machine washed.  Washing a down filled duvet can seriously damage the duvet or result in a misshapen useless item that you paid a lot of money for.  Professional dry cleaning is much safer.  Despite the expense, in all likelihood you will not have to clean it more than once a year.  If expense is a concern, another item to purchase at the time you buy your duvet is a duvet cover which is what encapsulates and decorates the duvet on your bed.  The cover can keep the duvet clean.  Depending on what the cover fabric is made of, you can probably wash it in a washing machine.  This would eliminate the need to dry cleaning the duvet.  Many duvet covers are made of cotton which makes it convenient for machine washing.

A big concern should be safe use of the duvet. Safety is something that you should be cognizant of even before making a purchase.  This has to do with making sure that the fabric of the duvet’s outer shell is made with fire resistant material.  There is no duvet that is going to be totally fireproof.  If the item catches fire, it will burn.  However, fire resistant material in the fabric will burn slower which should give you enough time to at least get out of bed and run out of the room.  Any fabric that is flammable with out any kind of fire resistant protection can result in a quick spread of flames that can result in serious burns or worse, fatal injuries.  Therefore, always check to make sure that fabric is fire resistant.
