Thinking of buying a Yamaha PSR

If you’re an aspiring pianist then a Yamaha PSR isn’t really for you, you’d be far better off with an instrument from the Yamaha Clavinova range. A PSR is what is known as an arranger keyboard, these instruments come with a wide selection of rhythms and music styles which are used to create musical arrangements. Thence it is used as more of a producing tool than a piano.

If you are looking for an arranger keyboard then the Yamaha PSR models are some of the best in the world. An entry level instrument costs around £130 and you get a surprising amount for your money. The PSR e223 is the manufacturer’s cheapest model, its light and has a great piano sound. This instrument features over 370 different pre-recorded sounds and a whopping 100+ songs. The PSR e223 offers a huge selection of features to create your own unique musical arrangements.

The PSR 223 is a great entry level instrument but it may not quite cut it if you’re an experienced musician looking for a more versatile model, enter the PSR S900. This model is the crème de la crème of arranger keyboards and has an unparalleled sound quality, the default piano sound of this instrument actually sounds like a traditional piano. The best thing about the PSR S900 is its MegaVoice samples; these are highly accurate reproductions of a whole range of different instruments. If you select a violin voice you won’t get the same mediocre recording of a violin, you will get a highly precise, authentic mimic of a real violin. Not only that, the PSR S900 allows you to apply violin techniques such as vibrato to the tone creating a highly realistic sample.

These two PSR models show the huge variety and gulf of quality between instruments within the same range. The Yamaha PSR e223 is perfect for any budding producer who wants to try his hand at creating some musical arrangements, whilst the higher end  PSR S900 is in affect a highly professional recording studio! Players who interested in mixing music and applying digital effects over existing songs may want to take a look at the Numark Axis 9 mixing decks, these will really spice up your own tracks and arrangements.
